A National Park for Children
Come and discover Berchtesgaden National Park
Have you already been to a National Park? The first one came into being in 1872 in the USA - today there are National Parks throughout the world including 14 that can be visited in Germany. So what exactly is a National Park?
The area which today comprises the Berchtesgaden National Park has never been very populated in the past. The climate is too cold and rainy and the mountains are steep and tedious to reach on foot. Therefore, nature here has remained, for the most part, undisturbed. There are few houses and streets and many rare animals and plants have survived or have established themselves here.
To ensure that nature in this area remains untouched, the name “National Park” was given and therefore became a protected area. As a result, humans are allowed little interference with the natural processes of nature. In some areas of the so-called core zone, nature must now be left completely alone.
A National Park protects nature, as well as researches what grows and lives where humans have little or no interference. Naturally, others should be informed of what takes place in a National Park, how beautiful nature is and what the researchers have discovered. Therefore, we offer environmental education where school groups and other groups are taken by National Park staff into nature. Here they explain what there is to see and allow visitors to discover and make observations on their own. For recreation, the Park allows hiking or mountain biking in certain areas. Therefore the trails in the National Park are regularly groomed.
