Research and GIS:

Learning to understand processes

Research is one of the foremost aims of a national park and contributes to a better understanding of nature’s processes. The findings resulting from research lead to directives for improved plant and animal protection, as well as for ecologically acceptable landscape use outside the national park. In this way, Berchtesgaden National Park has an effect far beyond its own borders.

The Geographical Information System (GIS) supports the research tasks, as well as the National Park’s management work. It is a computer data bank that manages land configuration data, be it watercourses, altitude levels or the presence of certain animal species. GIS allows this data to be charted onto maps and to freely combine several superimposed maps.

Responsible for Databank and coordination of research projects is

Department 60 for research and EDP
